UniComp's Search
Helpful Tips

UniComp's search engine has the ability to find anything on this web site. It is very powerful and can return multitudes of information. However, if you are looking for a particular item or page, it can become tedious. These search tips will help you avoid this. There are 3 important ways to improve your searches: Boolean, Fuzzy and Literal.

Boolean Search
The most common words to use in any search are called Boolean Operators which are: AND, NOT, OR, and NEAR. These words will dramatically increase the effectiveness and efficiency of your searches.

Example: you are looking for a green car.

If you used AND in your search, cars AND green, only pages containing cars and green will be displayed.

By using NEAR in your search, cars NEAR green, you will get the same results as with the AND search, however, the pages with the words cars and green in the closest proximity will be displayed first.

By using AND NOT in your search, cars AND NOT yellow, pages containing both the words cars and yellow will NOT be displayed.

By using OR in your search, cars OR green, the results will show every page that contains cars or green or both.

Fuzzy Search
You can also perform fuzzy searches. A fuzzy search allows you to find all forms of a word or all the words that begin with a particular prefix.

Example: if you enter cal*

You may find pages that included the words call, calendar, and calculate, etc.

Literal Search
If you want a phrase to be used literally, you should put QUOTES around the phrase.

Example: you are looking for real estate conveyancing

Enter a search of "real estate conveyancing" rather than just the words real estate conveyancing.

If you just enter the words without the quotation marks, your search results will display every instance of each of the words. When you place quotation marks around the search words, your search results would include only those pages that had the phrase real estate conveyancing.
